Power Line Combined Lightning & Surge Protection device
Surge is the topic, protection from which is must in this era. Sudden increase in voltage is surge. Surges are so fast that none of the safety devices like breakers, stabilizers, UPS, etc. are unable to sense it since, their response time is very slow in milliseconds, whereas surge comes and attack the end equipment in nanoseconds. Surge enters into a building / installation and subsequently attack the end equipments like TV, Refrigerator, Washing Machines, Music System, Computer, PLC, Variable frequency Drive, CNC Machines, etc. Damage to or destruction of equipment occurs at precisely the moment when one is dependent on its permanent availability. Apart from the costs for replacement or repairs, further costs are caused as a result of downtime of system parts or even due to loss of software and data. In general, the damage is manifested in destroyed conductors, PCB's or switches and even obvious mechanical damage to the equipment and building installation. Surge protector protects the electrical installation from transient caused by thunderstorms and switching processes. Surge enter into a building / installation through low voltage power supply, data processing systems, telecommunication systems, measurement and control systems and trans-receiver systems. Providing safety measures from all requires installation of all such types of surge arresters.
The most common and damaging source of surges is power line. These surges enters in the following ways:
1. Direct lightning strike on a building / low voltage overhead lines 2. Indirect lightning strikes: Electromagnetic coupling of lightning currents through low voltage overhead lines or through earthing installations. 3. Switching surges: These surges arises from on and off switching operations from switching of inductive and capacitive loads and from breaking of short- circuit currents. Also, electrical and electronic equipments may be damaged thorugh disconnection of production plant, lighting systems, transformers, welding machines, motors, etc.Highest voltage peaks or surges on low voltage network is caused by lightning. These surges can destroy the load completely. Switching surges does not produce highest voltage peaks as lightning, but they occur very frequently and also result in immediate failure of the installation. Surges also results in fast ageing of components used in electrical and electronic equipments and causes gradual damage to the equipment.
To provide protection from such lightning and switching surges, DT50/350-(3V+T), combined lightning and surge protector is required. It should be installed in parallel to the incoming of low voltage panel or main distribution board, sub distribution boards, UPS, IT, server room, research equipments, etc. (wherever protection is needed).
